AllAmericanGames.tv is a video based digital asset manager that also has image and audio capabilities. The web site was built to provide video services for the U.S. Army All-American Games events and related activities. This web application is at the enterprise level and scales to meet the demand of the championship broadcast by NBC Sports during the month of January. The event traffic is heavily cached and spread out among four servers that include a database server, a web server, a video encoding server and the Amazon S3 content delivery network cloud (CDN).
The work flow and file handling is unique for this web application. First the content manager uploads a video to the site, creates a page for it with all the meta data. The server takes the video and encodes to the proper video format that will play in the Open Source video player, Flowplayer. The video and related images will then travel to the Amazon S3 container for storage and serving. The Amazon S3 container provides and unlimited amount of storage and serving. It scales to meet the needs of any traffic surge.
There is a drag and drop AJAX and jQuery powered interface for managing the videos and adjusting their position in the video player carousel. This feature is only available to the content managers and is critical to managing the video content. There are currently five video channels and sub channels based on season can have dynamic filtering options built into the thumbnail list.
A powerful advertisement system that records the traffic and allows for easy administration of advertisements on the web site per user and/or role has been implemented on the web site. The number of ad impressions, click-throughs and other data is being recorded for each advertisement and can easily be displayed by graph and chart. It is also possible rotate the ads within a group.
This site serves as a successful case study of bringing Drupal to the enterprise. Videos and all!
